The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a popular destination for sea kayakers as well. The cliffs, caves and coves are custom made for exploration via water. Rentals are available in Munising, although put-in points are few and far between. We crossed the beach again, this time headed east, and climbed back up the hill to the Potato Patch campground. We made good time, and arrived in camp about 3PM. After setting up the tent, we lounged about, at a loss for entertainment. I decided to get out one of our Thermarest mattresses and lounge about on it. Big mistake. I leaned back against a log, and POW! blew a huge hole in the mattress. In the field repairs proved possible, however, with the aid of the patch kid I had brought along. Following the instructions, I heated a pan of water, applied the seam seal and pressed the patches into position. Luckily, the patches held, and I was able to sleep comfortably that night, instead of on the cold hard ground.
